GE Washing Machine Repair Service
You may have a HydroWaveTM washing machine. It’s designed to operate quieter than a typical washer.
Allow the water to fill until it shuts off. Then place a sock, or another identifiable article, into the washer and close the lid. The washer will take about 30 seconds to sense the load and engage the drive before it starts agitating. After 60 seconds open the lid and you should notice the article has moved inside the washer. If it has moved around then it is operating normally, it’s just quieter than expected. GE 4.2-cu ft high-efficiency top load washer
Check the fuses, breakers and the plug. The washer should be on a separate outlet.
Check to see if the lid switch probe/magnet is still in place. Some models have a small plastic piece that fits into a hole in the bottom right side of the open lid, which activates the lid switch when the lid is closed. Other models have a plastic coated magnet, that’s fastened with two screws, in the top right side of the open lid. Depending on the model, if probe or the magnet is missing, the washer will not agitate or spin even if the lid is closed.
Is the washer lid down?GE and Hotpoint washers will not operate (agitate or spin) with the lid up. When the lid is left up after starting the machine, it is possible on some newer models, for the washer to fill with water, the timer advance, and then drain the water.
Check the cycle selection. Is it in a soak cycle? Some models have Soak cycles that may be selected for 15 or 30 minutes prior to the main wash. See the owners manual for instruction on how to use.
Check the speed selector switch.Make sure it is pointing at the speed, not stuck in the middle. Turn the switch to correct speed and try again. This should work.
If the washer fills and fills but never runs, make sure standpipe is 30" high. Any less will cause water to siphon back out of tub and never agitate. To correct, drain hose must be 30" high. May require plumber to install standpipe. Filling and Draining at the Same Time.
Try resetting the water level up or down to ensure water level control switch is not sticking. It is not necessary to drain washer to do this.
If the washer is full of water but just hums, it could be that something is stuck in the pump. Push knob in to turn off and contact service for diagnosis and repair.
If the washer was stored where temperature is below freezing, water in the pump can freeze and lock the motor.Allow time to thaw and it should start.
Washers - Fills But Will Not Agitate
Washers - Resetting Electronic Controls on a Washer
If there is a pause in the washer cycle, the controls will lock up. The pause can occur because of a power failure or it was put in the test mode at the factory.
Also, if the washer was stopped before the cycle was complete or the consumer has pushed the stop/pause button to temporarily stop the cycle and the cycle is not reset. Over a period of 24 hours, the washer will pump out and spin, but will stay in the final spin.
To correct the situation, shut off the circuit breaker for 30 seconds or unplug the washer, then turn the timer knob around and back to any position other than final spin. Verify the water is turned on and restore power. This should resolve the issue.

Washers - Water Level and Load Size
Description of washer water level and typical load size:
Water Level Setting
Typical Load Size
Small Less then 1/3 full of clothes
Medium Between 1/3 and 1/2 full of clothes
Large Between 1/2 and 2/3 full of clothes
Extra Large and Super Over 2/3 full of clothes
We recommend trying to match water levels and load size as closely as possible.
Load dry items loosely, no higher than the top row of holes in the washer tub.
Using too much water can result in poor washing performance due to lower detergent ratio.
Using too little water can cause poor rinsing, linting problems, wrinkling, and excessive wear on fabrics.
Try to wash same type materials together. For example, do not wash lint producing fabrics with lint "collecting" fabrics (i.e., towels with corduroy).
If the above suggestions do not correct the situation, you may need to schedule service. If you would like to schedule a service appointment, please contact Consumer Service at 1-519-500-7773
